Pool Removal

Three ways a pool can leave the yard

A pool that nobody swims in still needs upkeep, and an empty one is a hole in the yard. Pool removal ends that, and there are three ways it can end, depending on what kind of pool it is and what you want the yard to be afterward.

Each one below is described by what you are left with. Which one fits your pool is something we settle with you at the free on-site quote, before anything is scheduled.

What We Remove

Above-ground removal, full removal, or fill-in

Above-ground pool removal

The above-ground pool comes down and leaves the property: walls, frame, liner and any ladder or steps attached to it. The spot where the pool stood is left clear of pool material.

In-ground pool, full removal

Nothing of the in-ground pool stays in the ground. The pool shell comes out in full and is hauled off. What goes back into the hole, and how the surface is finished, is agreed in the quote.

In-ground pool, fill-in

The in-ground pool stops being a pool and becomes part of the yard, filled where it sits. Part of the pool structure stays below ground. That is the difference between the two in-ground outcomes: whether any of the pool remains under the yard.

What Affects Your Quote

What changes the price of a pool removal

Your free on-site quote gives you one price before the work is booked. These are the things that move it.

Which outcome you choose

An above-ground pool, an in-ground fill-in and an in-ground full removal are different amounts of work and different amounts of material to haul.

Size and build of the pool

A bigger pool means more material, and a pool built from heavier material means heavier loads.

What surrounds it

Pool decking, a concrete apron or fencing that is coming out along with the pool is part of the same quote.

The way in

How a truck reaches the backyard, through a gate, past a fence or across a lawn, is part of every pool quote.

Published Figures

What published guides say pool removal costs

Every pool job is quoted on site, after we have seen the pool, the yard and the way in, and that on-site quote is the price you pay for everything quoted. Published averages are useful for a budget, not as a quote.

Angi's national pool removal cost guide puts the national average at $6,000 and above-ground removal at $300 to $800 (Angi, updated 2026-10-12).

For a Texas comparison, Angi's Dallas page gives an average of $6,186, with most projects between $5,155 and $8,248 (Angi, Dallas, updated 2026-06-16). That is a Dallas figure, not an Austin one.

The national guide also gives ranges for in-ground fill-in and full in-ground removal, but it states different ranges for each in different places on the same page, so they are not repeated here.

Before the Work

Before the pool work starts

Whether a city requires a permit to remove or fill in a pool is set by that city, and the property owner confirms it with the city's building department before the work date. The guide to demolition permits in Central Texas sets out the published demolition rules of the cities it covers, with sources and the dates they were read.

Permits, utility disconnection and any required inspections are the property owner's responsibility. Once the site is ready, we take the pool out or fill it in as quoted, and haul off what comes out.

FAQs

Pool removal frequently asked questions

What is the difference between removing a pool and filling it in?

What is left underground. A full removal takes the whole in-ground pool out of the ground. A fill-in leaves part of the pool structure below the yard and fills over it. Both end with no pool; they do not end with the same ground.

Do I need a permit to remove a pool?

It depends on the city where the property sits, and the city's building department is the one to ask about a pool specifically. Published demolition rules for the cities around Austin, with sources and read dates, are in the Central Texas demolition permit guide.

Can I build on the spot where a pool was filled in?

That depends on the city and on how the fill was done, and the authority on it is the city's building department, not a removal company. Ask them before you plan a structure over a filled-in pool.

What happens to the concrete and the liner?

Whatever comes out of the yard, concrete and liner included, is loaded and hauled off as part of the same job and the same quote. The state's rules on which landfills take which kinds of debris are summarized in the guide's section on where the debris goes.

Does the pool need to be drained first?

Tell us when you ask for a quote whether the pool still holds water. We will confirm at the on-site quote what needs to be done before the work date.

How much does pool removal cost in Austin?

There is no fixed price; it depends on the pool, the outcome you want and the access. Published national and Dallas figures are further up this page, and in what demolition costs in Austin. For your pool, call (512) 522-3569 or request a free on-site quote online.
