What Junk Removal Will and Won't Take (and What to Do Instead)

Junk removal crews can haul away most of what is cluttering your home, but there is a short list of items they legally cannot take. Here is what we can grab same day, what we cannot, and exactly where to take the rest here in Austin.

The Short Answer

Junk removal takes almost all standard household and yard junk: furniture, appliances, mattresses, electronics, construction debris, and more. What they cannot take are hazardous materials such as wet paint, chemicals, fuels, and tires, because disposal facilities will not accept them mixed in with a regular load. Those items have their own free or low-cost drop-off options in Austin.

What Junk Removal Companies Will Take

If it is not hazardous and it fits in the truck, it is almost certainly fair game. Common items we haul every day include:

  • Furniture: couches, sectionals, recliners, dressers, tables, chairs, desks, bed frames
  • Mattresses and box springs: any size, recycled whenever possible
  • Appliances: refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, ovens, dishwashers, water heaters
  • Electronics: TVs, computers, monitors, printers (most e-waste)
  • Yard waste: branches, brush, leaves, fencing, sod
  • Construction and remodel debris: drywall, lumber, flooring, cabinets, light demo
  • Whole-space cleanouts: garages, storage units, estates, offices, hoarding situations
  • Hot tubs and sheds: dismantled and hauled (priced separately)
  • General household junk: boxes, toys, exercise equipment, grills, and almost anything else

See the full breakdown on our services page. The rule of thumb we tell Austin customers: if it fits in the truck and it is not on the hazardous list below, it is gone.

What Junk Removal Companies Won't Take

These items are restricted by law or by the disposal facilities themselves. A single spill or leaking container can contaminate an entire truckload headed for donation or recycling, which is why no reputable hauler can take them:

  • Wet or liquid paint, stains, and solvents
  • Motor oil, gasoline, and other fuels
  • Pesticides, herbicides, and pool chemicals
  • Propane tanks, helium tanks, and fire extinguishers (pressurized containers)
  • Tires
  • Asbestos and lead-based materials
  • Medical waste, including sharps and pharmaceuticals
  • Ammunition, fireworks, and other explosives
  • Loose batteries, especially lithium-ion

A quick note on a few gray-area items: fully dried, hardened latex paint in an open can is usually fine, since it is no longer a liquid. And many haulers can take appliances with refrigerants (like fridges and AC units) and most electronics, recycling them properly. When in doubt, ask before pickup day.

Where to Take Hazardous Items in Austin

The good news is that every refused item has a safe, legal home in the Austin area. Here is where to take the most common ones:

Paint, chemicals, fuels, and batteries

Austin Resource Recovery runs a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) drop-off for City of Austin curbside customers, and also offers an on-demand collection program for some materials. This is the right destination for paint, solvents, automotive fluids, pool chemicals, and batteries. Check AustinTexas.gov for the current drop-off location, hours, and what they accept.

Tires

Many Austin-area tire retailers will recycle old tires for a small per-tire fee, and the City periodically holds recycling and reuse drop-off events. Do not leave tires at the curb for normal trash pickup.

Electronics and TVs

While many junk removal companies can take electronics, you can also use retailer take-back programs and certified e-waste recyclers in the Austin area for items like CRT televisions.

Big bulky items you just want gone

For furniture, appliances, and household goods that are not hazardous, that is exactly what junk removal is for. You can also check Austin Resource Recovery's bulk collection schedule, donate to organizations like the Salvation Army or a local resale center, or post items to a neighborhood Buy Nothing or Nextdoor group.
